Next thread here!

Just an update on my situation: I'll almost certainly be moving within the next week or two. The last update for a little while will be next Wednesday, the 19th. I'm going to then take a break to set things up, get to know my surroundings and such. I hope to be ready to start doing this again on the 28th, but I will post that week's megathread on the 24th.

After that, I will hopefully be able to keep doing this more consistently and things will get less busy than they have in recent weeks. I strongly appreciate all the compliments I get and I'm glad to be part of such a great community! :Care-Comrade:

Resources For Understanding The War Beyond The Bulletins

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map, who is an independent youtuber with a mostly neutral viewpoint.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have good analysis (though also a couple bad takes here and there)

Understanding War and the Saker: neo-conservative sources but their reporting of the war (so far) seems to line up with reality better than most liberal sources.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict and, unlike most western analysts, has some degree of understanding on how war works. He is a reactionary, however.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent journalist reporting in the Ukrainian warzones.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Westerners simultaneously justifying the atomic bombing of Japan and condemning Russia's conventional bombings as fascism is breaking my brain.

How the fuck does someone hold both of those positions simultaneously?

The propaganda line that the use of nukes was somehow humanitarian because it saved a billion people from dying in an invasion is seared into the brains of every american.

Telling them that all the top military officials said it was unnecessary does nothing, telling them that all we needed to do was guarantee they could keep their emperor, WHICH WE DID ANYWAY, does nothing.

I think on some level they have to believe it was justified, because the alternative is that they are just as bad as the Nazis. Literally incinerating cities full of infants and children for geopolitical aims.

Try to tell them that the firebombing of Tokyo was worse and watch their confusion because they've never heard about the firebombing of Tokyo.

They have. I sometimes mentally self harm by reading Texas textbooks. They just didn’t pay attention.

I had to argue the defense for the atom bombing in a high school logic class and my method was to just argue that human life was totally expendable and instant vaporization by nuke was actually a humane way of killing people.

Terrifyingly I almost won the debate I was so clearly trying to throw.

Counterpoint: fire bombs don’t fuck up children decades later who have nothing to do with perpetuating the economic and social base of the current enemy at the time of bombing (a foundational rationalization for total war targeting civilians being ok).

To be fair: I’d rather be nuked than fire bombed if I had to be the victim of one. Maybe, depends on how far away it detonates I guess.

japan was bad country, ukraine is good country

In today's update I quoted an article/interview by Jacobin, and it has a great paragraph analyzing Trump but I think broadly applies to most Americans, including most of the people on Reddit:

First, I need to clarify how I see “ideology” per se. On the one hand, we have the common usage in ordinary language, usually referring to some familiar body of political ideas, a readily recognizable program, or a codified body of dominant values and beliefs (e.g., liberalism, conservatism, socialism, etc.). Trump shows little evidence of a coherent ideology in that more restrictive sense, except in the most debased, banalized, and undisciplined set of ways. On the other hand, he does see and read the world through a definite set of lenses, on the basis of assumptions, prejudices, bits and pieces of ideas and rhetoric, fragmentary citations, visceral impulses, and unconscious understandings, whose coherence is certainly available to be reconstructed — as an imaginary relation to his actual conditions of existence, in Louis Althusser’s famous phrase. Trump, of course, has an outlook whose coherence can be found. But this isn’t organized around, or even consciously derived from, any codified core of texts or ideas. It’s the opposite of any formal system of belief. It’s more a matrix of dispositions, a bunch of master tropes centered narcissistically around toxic masculinity, monstrously selfish desires, acquisitiveness and wealth, “America,” violence, success, dominance, loyalty, power, and so forth.

It's not fascism, but it absolutely does constitute war crimes. Bombing civilian infrastructure, leaving ordinary people who have nothing to do with the war without the power they require for a lot of survival needs (especially as the weather turns), etc. Russia should be condemned for doing this. Even above the condemnation for "normal" war which is already a hell of a crime.

Of course, it is absolute, inane hypocrisy to excuse or ignore when the U.S. does it (which it does all the fucking time). Or when Ukraine does it, which has persistently since 2014 and has only gotten worse at now (including the bridge). Or to somehow imply those countries haven't done it "as badly" or on as large a scale or whatever.

Sure. It's "understandable" from the the "realist" geopolitical perspective; that is, understanding how nation states operate and are likely to react to things and play off of each other at the expense of the lives of working-class people. I don't have to accept any of this as justified in order to acknowledge that.

I totally agree. Total warfare is one of the most evil concepts in history.

Capitalist states engaging in this escalation is seriously showing the end of the system.

Some people can hold those contradictory positions because their team is doing it ( or the other team is). At least that is politically consistent if not morally. Others are simply to busy to keep up so they revert to the null of state propaganda because they rightfully recognize futility of trying to change it and the severe consequences for trying to change it or just point out how fucked up America is.
