Next thread here!

Just an update on my situation: I'll almost certainly be moving within the next week or two. The last update for a little while will be next Wednesday, the 19th. I'm going to then take a break to set things up, get to know my surroundings and such. I hope to be ready to start doing this again on the 28th, but I will post that week's megathread on the 24th.

After that, I will hopefully be able to keep doing this more consistently and things will get less busy than they have in recent weeks. I strongly appreciate all the compliments I get and I'm glad to be part of such a great community! :Care-Comrade:

Resources For Understanding The War Beyond The Bulletins

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map, who is an independent youtuber with a mostly neutral viewpoint.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have good analysis (though also a couple bad takes here and there)

Understanding War and the Saker: neo-conservative sources but their reporting of the war (so far) seems to line up with reality better than most liberal sources.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict and, unlike most western analysts, has some degree of understanding on how war works. He is a reactionary, however.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent journalist reporting in the Ukrainian warzones.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

My boomer dad's analysis of the war:

    • Russia bad!
    • Russians have never cared for human life!
    • Russia just grabs random people off the street and gives them two weeks of training before sending them to the front!
    • No Russians like the war or Putin!
    • Russian equipment is all bad and outdated!
    • Putin is crazy!
    • Russia can never win because NATO is much more advanced!
    • The USSR would have lost WWII had it not been for US aid!
    • They had no industry back then and they don't have any now!

It's amazing to see a brain that was broken by cold war propaganda from an early age react to modern Russophobia.

      Putin is crazy!

Talked to a sociology professor today who seemed to believe that the realist view of geopolitics doesn't work for the current conflict, because Russia isn't acting rationally :shrug-outta-hecks:

it's always very convenient how the West is always acting rationally while [insert west's enemy here] is always acting irrationally

Did you ask the professor why they bother showing up and calling themselves a professor if they are such an intellectually cowardly fool that they cannot comprehend blatantly stated motives?

LOL. The Mongols turned back because the Western European terrain wasn't conducive to the kind of war-making they did. It had basically nothing to do with "the strength of the defenders".

EDIT: Oh. Also because they took a look at the shitty state of the cities and realized they wouldn't gain much by conquering them.

Yeah the Mongols didn't really bother with long campaigns along the landscape, raiding small towns and shit, they lived and died by cities.
