Tbh it’s barely about Ukraine, this is just an excuse to reassert control over the region by getting Russian weapons out of the hands of LatAm governments. If you have American weapons, it’s easier to justify American trainers, American aid, and all of a sudden you’re a “staunch ally.”

I’m liking Varn’s theory that multipolarity necessitates smaller nations reaching out to distant imperial powers for support because they’re less likely to fuck with you. Hence Venezuela cozying up to Russia and Vietnam doing the same with the US despite the wild ideological differences. I can’t imagine anyone going along with this unless they’re true client states of the US. It would make more sense for Latam to swing for Russia or China

I think Russia got a head start, but China's connections to the region will end up the strongest. Something to keep an eye out for in 2023. Ecuador, currently US-aligned due to its neoliberal president, signed a trade agreement with china just recently, and will not be the last.

Maybe. In my very layman’s opinion, China might not be in the place to, or may be unwilling to, offer that support in the near future based on how the belt and rod initiative is going/the incoming sovereign debt crisis that involves nations China’s backed. Now China has made it very clear that they’re not the IMF and will not demand austerity from the nations that are defaulting, but it’s also unclear whether they’ll be willing to make these investments in the future. Would be a goddamn shame but Russia may have fucked the dog for everyone with this war. It’s hard to do grand infrastructure projects when several of the involved nations are at open hostilities with each other

MIC Karen, barely concealing her bloodlust:

Come on baby, you're so rich and full of resources and don't really need them all for yourself. Don't give it to China and Russia, please. I'm warning you.

Bass-boosted :parenti: YOU DON'T GO TO POOR COUNTRIES TO MAKE MONEY. MOST COUNTRIES ARE RICH. IT'S THE PEOPLE THAT ARE POOR. BUT THERE'S BILLIONS TO BE MADE THERE, TO BE CARVED OUT AND BE TAKEN, THERE'S BEEN BILLIONS FOR 400 YEARS.

    Also,

I think they're [China] playing chess, and I think they're [Russia] playing checkers.

Both really difficult abstract strategy games for her.

They're both trying to undermine democracies

    Hey, that's our job. :cia:

This is very weird, there aren't a lot of russian weapons in LATAM. Russia is not a common market for LATAM, we buy weapons from the US, France, Italy, Israel and Germany, for the most part. Brazil kinda makes their own.

Neither Russia or China managed to sell weapons to LATAM countries in huge quantities, some exceptions are Perú (mostly old Soviet tech for the Army and Air Force), Venezuela (largest consumer of russian-made weapons, they will never give them up) and also Nicaragua and Cuba, neither of them will just "donate" their weapons to a country that is at war with their ally. I am really struggling to find more russian or even soviet made weapons in service here in LATAM, there are basically none. Other countries operate small quantity of weapons like assault rifles, anti-tank weapon systems (nothing THAT advanced) and a bunch of trucks and helicopters, that's basically it.

    It's a trap lol.

The fucking smug audacity that the state department has when talking to LATAM is both infuriating and kind of hilarious.

You know they'd just be swapped out for a pile of M-16s and Bradley Fighting Vehicles.
